Aha and Aah

There are ordinary moments that we choose to make sacred – traditionally we do this through sacraments. We can view ourselves as priests, making our own moments sacred. Baptism is a sacrament modeled on the moment portrayed in Matthew in which Jesus was filled with a sacred sense of purpose. We view baptism, not as bringing grace to the child in the moment, but as recognizing the grace already present in the child. But John’s baptism was a baptism not only of grace, but also of repentance, a turning of our life into new patterns. There is an aha moment when we recognize that our life must be different. But there is also an aah moment when we recognize the holiness already within.

Sacred/Profane

We all encounter situations that flick our switch, press our button, make us flip our lid. But we aren’t inclined to view these moments as sacred. Both historically as a believing people and as individuals, we have tried to create a clear distinction between sacred space and the profane. But isn’t it up to us to invest our lives with their sacred character? Gretta opens up the conversation for suggestions about how we might encourage the sacred even in those situations which seem most profane.
