What’s in your junk drawer?
Gretta Vosper introduces the work of Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat and the resources they have developed to read life spiritually. Our spirituality isn’t a separate compartment, but is something which infuses every other aspect of living. We are invited to visualize our junk drawer, which most of us keep in our kitchen, and which we typically regard as pretty mundane. What is in there? What does it tell us about ourselves? Are there other ways to read the junk in our drawer? Ways that speak to the spiritual in our lives? Listen as members of the congregation admit to hoarding all sorts of thing, then try to interpret them spiritually.
Beyond Hope
This week Gretta Vosper opens by introducing an article called “Beyond Hope” by Derek Jensen which appeared in Orion Magazine. Jensen challenges our customary understanding of hope, suggesting that we use hope to abdicate responsbility - we hope when we believe that we no longer have any influence over matters. Instead, Jensen invites us to move beyond hope, to discover how we can in fact become agents for change. We acknowledge with thanks both Jensen & Orion Magazine for permission to present here a reading of the article in its entirety.
After presenting the article, Gretta opens things up, inviting members of the congregation to reflect upon the meaning of hope. Perhaps not surprisingly, what follows reveals the diversity of views that find themselves worshiping together under the same roof.
