Readings are from Ecclesiastes 1:4—10 and a poem by Thomas Wolfe. There are things we know — like love and pain — whose existence we cannot prove. Our knowledge develops in a progression from things we don’t know to things we do know. But there is another kind of knowing that arises from our experience e.g. “This is good coffee!” The writer of Ecclesiastes focuses upon knowing as experience and tests his knowing against the experience of believing (faith) and doing (ethics). In a progressive community of faith, we find ourselves doing the same thing and arriving at interesting conclusions!
